Banca sinks off Cebu, 15 rescued

DANAO CITY, Cebu – An unregistered motor banca capsized and sank off the waters between Danao City and Camotes Island Sunday night, the Cebu Coast Guard said.

Acting Cebu Coast Guard Station Commander Rodolfo Villajuan said the motor banca was on its way to Danao City from San Francisco town in Camotes Island when it was battered by huge waves.

The banca, which was carrying 14 passengers and its skipper, capsized, prompting the passengers, including two five-year-old kids, to jump off the boat and into the dark waters.

It took about five hours for the passengers, who were floating in the waters, to be rescued by a passing passenger vessel, the Ormoc-bound M/V Wonderful Star.

All of the passengers and the banca’s skipper were rescued by the vessel and brought to Ormoc City.

Meanwhile, a 5-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool in Compostela town after she was left unattended by her parents and relatives on Sunday.

The child, identified as Riza Gabriel, was swimming with her parents and relatives inside the Green Lagoon Beach Resort but was unnoticed due to the number of swimmers during the time.

At lunchtime, her parents were puzzled why Riza was not around. It was already too late when they found the child already floating in the swimming pool.
