NEGROS ORIENTAL – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 has recently reported the seizure of two long trucks loaded with a total of 52.00 cubic meters of firewood bundles and round cut logs of Gmelina, and other wood species in Barangay Banga, Bayawan City, Negros Oriental.
The apprehension happened last May 28 made by the Philippine National Police Bayawan City headed by Police Inspector Abell Laborte due to the failure to present supporting transport documents.
The contraband was estimated to be worth P50,000.
DENR 7 Regional Executive Director Dr. Isabelo R. Montejo articulated the importance of transporting forest products with original documents for monitoring and controlling purposes which in this shipment it was not covered by any transport documents.
“This is a violation of section 77 of Presidential Decree 705 as amended by Executive Order 277 and as renumbered by Republic Act 7161 and Executive Order 23,” said Montejo.
The apprehended two long trucks with plate no. 090710 and RNX 670 together with the confiscated forest products are now under the custody of City Environment and Natural Resources Officer (CENRO) Joel P. Baterna of Bayawan City, Negros Oriental for safekeeping.
Aside from Gmelina species, other forest products apprehended included Acacia Mangium and other native tree species and fruit trees.
The team successfully detained the drivers of the two trucks namely Jomar Hisman Pastrana, and Rinard Agosto Matta at the PNP Bayawan City Police Station.
“We will be filing the appropriate case on the perpetrators in coordination with the PNP and our Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office in Negros Oriental,” he added.
“It should be emphasized here that DENR Secretary Ramon JP Paje has been seriously implementing the anti-illegal logging campaign to stop the wanton destruction of our forest resources, and enforcement of other environmental laws,” said Montejo. – CebuHeadlines.com
