Vessel Catches Fire in Ormoc; 544 Passengers Rescued


ORMOC CITY – A fire hits a passenger vessel near the Ormoc City pier Saturday dawn, less than a month after a passenger banca capsized in the same area, killing more than 50 passengers.

All of the 544 passengers and crew of MV Wonderful Stars, a vessel owned by Roble Shipping Inc, were reportedly rescued safely. No one was reported injured in the incident.

According to the Ormoc Coast Guard and PNP, the fire occurred at 4:20 a.m. Saturday. The vessel arrived from Cebu past 3 a.m..

Investors were still establishing the cause of the blaze.

Roble Shipping is a Cebu-based shipping line with office located in Cebu City. It currently has a fleet of 7 roll-on roll-off vessels.

Last month, a two-deck vessel carrying 173 passengers capsized shortly after leaving the Ormoc City Port on its way to the port of Pilar in Camotes, Cebu. –
