Deployment of Military Personnel in Cebu City Begins

If you see uniformed military men armed with long firearms roaming around Cebu City, don’t be alarmed. They have been deployed to assist the police in keeping the city’s peace and order.

At least 88 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) are now visible in Cebu City’s public areas such as major roads, terminals, ports and malls, including barangays with high concentration of illegal activities.

Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, the city’s deputy mayor for police matters, urged the public not to be alarmed by the presence of the uniformed soldiers because the purpose of the deployment is mainly for public safety and order.

The soldiers will hold joint operations with the police, such as foot patrol, police-military visibility and various community relation activities.

Tumulak said bulk of the deployed soldiers will be deployed in areas with presence of illegal activities.

It was Tumulak who passed a resolution in the Council requesting the AFP to assist the Philippine National Police in securing the city. A copy of the resolution was furnished to the Office of the President.

The presence of soldiers in public areas is expected to prevent petty crimes, such as snatching and pickpocketing, the councilor said. –
